Late autumn is the time when trees enter dormancy. Compared with the growing season, when energy is used for leaves, flowers, and fruit, the demand for water and nutrients decreases, making it an ideal time for roots to take hold deeply in the soil.
On October 29, under a clear autumn sky, approximately 250 WeLoveU members from Dongdaemun District, Seoul, gathered at Huigyeong 2 Waterside Park around Jungnangcheon Stream. They came to plant trees along the park’s walking paths through the Mom’s Garden Project.

Lee Pil-hyung, Head of Dongdaemun District, along with five district council members, also joined in urban greening efforts to respond to the climate crisis and improve the local landscape.
Planting Area
300m2
Tree Species and Number Planted
Cornelian cherry: 13 trees
Lilac: 14 trees
Azalea: 800 trees
Members gathered in small groups, carrying equipment prepared by the district office, and carefully planted trees in the empty spaces of the flower beds along the walking paths. The trees were planted in mixed species so that they could complement one another and create synergistic effects.
Effects of Mixed Planting

Improving Visual Appeal
Flowers and fruits of different colors create a diverse and vibrant landscape

Enhancing Ecological Diversity
Various flowers and fruits provide habitats for insects, birds, and other living organisms

Stabilizing Soil and Water Quality
Different root structures intermingle, reducing soil erosion during rainfall and promoting rainwater infiltration, which helps replenish groundwater and purify water quality
Lee Pil-hyung, Head of Dongdaemun District, said, “Events like this can revive the community and save the Earth,” and asked that many more good activities continue in the future.
Before and After the Moms Garden Activity

WeLoveU members expressed their hope that the newly planted trees would grow well, help alleviate the urban heat island effect, and contribute—even in a small way—to improving the quality of life for local residents.

Warm soil and cool breezes make this the perfect season for trees to take root and thrive. Before autumn slips away, plant even a single small tree and help create a green haven in the city. Change begins with hands that care for the Earth and for our neighbors.
