On November 22, 2018, the Appointment Ceremony of WeLoveU University Student Environmental Leaders 2018 was held at the Gachon Convention Center in Gachon University, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. It was hosted by the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation to appoint some university students around the world, who are dedicated to protecting the global environment, as the Intl. WeLoveU University Student Environment Leaders. The WeLoveU will support them and cooperate in climate change response and environmental protection.
About 400 people attended the ceremony, including Chairwoman Zahng Gil-jah, environmental leaders of overseas university students, and Korean university student members. Duberly Rodriguez Tineo, the Supreme Judge of the Judicial Power of Peru (Former President of the Judicial Power and of the Supreme Court of Justice of Peru) and Goodwill Ambassador of Environmental Protection of the Organization of American States [OAS], also attended and congratulated the members.
The Convention Center became lively with university students arriving early on the event day. They waited for the event to begin, chattering by twos and three and taking photos in the photo zone on one side.
The ceremony began at 3:20 p.m. In her opening speech, Chairwoman Zahng Gil-jah said that practical efforts are necessary to prevent disasters that are constantly occurring in the global village. She called the members “young environmental leaders who love humanity and has good will,” and also encouraged them by saying that she hoped today’s event would become “an opportunity to help the future of humanity.”
Justice Rodriguez explained the Peruvian government’s efforts to create a “blue planet” on his congratulatory address, and emphasized that “environmental issues are the task that all governments in the world ought to make efforts for.” Furthermore, he was applauded as he announced his determination to do his best even if it is “little power for the right thing, especially for the environment.”
Then, the appointment ceremony started. The 14 students from 11 universities in the United States, Peru, Rep. of South Africa and the Philippines, were selected as the Intl. WeLoveU University Student Environmental Leaders. Chairwoman Zahng encouraged the students who contributed to raising environmental awareness by steadily carrying out environmental activities in their universities and local communities, by giving a letter of appointment and a certificate of scholarship.
Next, the University Student Environmental Leaders’ case presentation followed. The first speaker, Seth Siglock from Paloma College Denver, U.S., explained the importance of environmental cleanups and awareness raising, giving examples of the beach in San Diego which is suffering from plastic garbage. The audience was sad to see the beach filled with garbage.
The second speaker, Gioan Murga Diaz from Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, presented the topic, “The Beginning of Great Results Is Mostly Weak.” She introduced the cleanup campaign that was carried out at Carpayo Beach, one of the most seriously polluted coasts in South America. She said, “One practice is more important than a thousand words. Small practices will make a big difference.”
The last speaker was Lee Da-ryung from Ewha Womans’ University, who is a Korean university student environmental leader. She introduced the environmental protection activities of the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation such as the Clean World Movement and said, “Environmental leaders should lead people to solve problems that cannot be solved by individuals.” She also encouraged the members to play an active role in environmental protection with the mindset of an environmental leader.
Justice Rodriguez said, “I’m very pleased that university students from the various parts of Peru too have been appointed as environmental leaders. I expect that the young people who are appointed as environmental leaders will have a lot of influence on improving environmental awareness. The WeLoveU Foundation’s practical activities will be a great help in improving environmental welfare in Peru as well.”
Through the ceremony, university students keenly felt the necessity of the environmental protection movement, and decided to start with small things. “I would like to show good examples from small works as an environmental leader. Korean university students are very enthusiastic about environmental protection. I think university students in the United States can learn from that example,” said Seth Siglock, who had been appointed as an Intl. WeLoveU University Student Environmental Leader.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a university student environmental leader. Individuals can only make small changes, but they can make even bigger changes if they unite. I will make efforts to raise the environmental awareness in order to change Africa and the whole world when I return to my home country,” said Lesedi Mokgautsi from University of Cape Town, Rep. of South Africa.
“I was shocked to see the pictures of the garbage floating on the sea; it was more polluted than I had thought. I will be picking up trash on the road from now on. I will start to practice even this small deed,” said Yoo Ji-suk from Bucheon University, Korea.
The newly appointed Intl. WeLoveU University Student Environmental Leaders are going to lead diverse environmental activities together with the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation and create more environmental leaders. Furthermore, they are expected to act as a bridge in forming a cooperative channel with universities around the world.
