Established a “sense of security” for students and local residents
In Kirtipur, Nepal, outside of Kathmandu, there are still signs of earthquakes that happened several years ago. Many villagers are having hard times, living in the village where the restoration work is still in progress.
At the Janasewa School, which has over 1,000 students in grades 1 through 12 from elementary school to high school, there was no gymnasium. On rainy or blazing hot days, the students could not do any physical activity. And yet, the school couldn’t do anything about it because it was not in a good financial situation.
When the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation heard about it, the members discussed with Kirtipur municipality and decided to construct a multipurpose hall for the school. On August 18, 2017, the WeLoveU signed an MOU with Janasewa School and started the construction after one month. The hall was built on a vacant lot in front of the school. High reinforced concrete columns were built on the flat ground, and then the roof was installed. The structure of the building was substantially built to withstand earthquakes.
On October 8, 2018, the building completion ceremony was held at the newly-built multipurpose hall. Around 70 people attended the event, including Ramesh Maharjan the Mayor of Kirtipur Municipality, school employees, students, WeLoveU members, and local residents. The event, which started with a congratulatory performance prepared by the students, proceeded in a friendly atmosphere from beginning to end. On this day, Mayor Maharjan proposed the WeLoveU to sign an MOU with the municipality, delightedly saying, “The multipurpose hall will help not only the students but also the local residents to train for physical fitness.”
Principal Nanda Kumari Maharjan expressed her gratitude to the WeLoveU that helped build the hall with a mother’s love by saying, “A sports facility where students can exercise even when it rains was our long-cherished dream. The WeLoveU has carried out many activities around the world such as blood drives, walkathon, neighborly love, and so on. We would like to be part of it.” The building completion ceremony was reported in the local media, and it received much attention.
The multipurpose hall will be open to local residents as well as to the students of Janasewa School, and it will be used as a facility for daily exercise. It can also be used as an emergency shelter on the occasion of a disaster. An official from the WeLoveU said that they would continue to discuss with the municipality and provide educational supplies and books for schools that need help.
